About Neil Sanderson

Neil Sanderson, digital performance managerHello, and thanks for visiting!

I live in Auckland, New Zealand, where I manage digital strategy and performance for a wide range of clients. This includes designing and building websites, providing web data analysis, performing search engine optimisation, managing paid search programmes and social media.

In previous roles, I have led large digital teams at major news organisations, including the largest newspapers in Canada and New Zealand.

I also led a team at the New Zealand Automobile Association which was responsible for building, maintaining and optimising almost 600 websites for small businesses.

At Toronto-based tech startup Eqentia, where I was Chief Curator and Director of Client Services, I used my experience in journalism to help publishers and other businesses to aggregate, organize and republish digital content, using Eqentia’s semantic technology and tools.

Before that, I was Assistant Managing Editor at the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper. My responsibilities included editorial strategy and content for thestar.com, healthzone.ca, yourhome.ca and parentcentral.ca – sites that attracted 5.5 million users per month and delivered more than 60 million page views.

Before joining the Star, I worked for almost seven years as the founding editor of nzherald.co.nz, the online edition of the New Zealand Herald. This was the heyday of nzherald.co.nz, when it was the country’s most popular online news service.

I built my first websites in the late 1990s, including a site for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Auckland.

Earlier in my career, I worked as a broadcast journalist, consultant, trainer and freelance writer. One of my most interesting assignments was teaching broadcast journalism in South Africa, immediately after the end of apartheid in the mid 1990s.

During the late 1980s, my wife and I sailed across the Pacific on our 38′ sailboat. I worked along the way, training broadcasters in about a dozen countries, and consulting to a highly successful commercial radio network.

I have a BSc degree from Trent University, and a Certificate in Higher Education from Unitec Institute of Technology. I have also done post-graduate studies in business at the University of Auckland and have been certified by Google in:

  • Google Analytics
  • Google AdWords – Display Advertising
  • Google AdWords – Search Advertising
